Choice Field Metadata Resetting for Excel 2007 file (.xslx) in SharePoint 2007 (MOSS)
I recently had an issue where an Excel spreadsheet stored in a document library in SharePoint was losing metadata when the document was saved. After playing around a little, I found that when a document was edited via the browser interface (Edit Properties page) the metadata values for choice columns would reset. I found that if the metadata was set from a Microsoft Office (2007) application such as Word or Excel, that changes to metadata were successfully saved to SharePoint. If I then edited the properties of the same document in sharePoint, the values selected for various choice columns reset back to the default.
In this case, my workaround to resolve the issue was to convert the document back to an Office 2003 compatible document (.xls), then save back to SharePoint, replacing or removing the original 2007 compatible version.
